Google Chromecast HDMI Review

A few days back, I bought a much hyped new life saver in town called Google Chromecast HDMI. Heard a lot about it so thought to give it a try and see for myself, the excitement it brings in my life. This genius little thing surprised me as soon as I connected it with my TV HDMI port. Without any connectivity option my laptop surprisingly picked the dongle in the network. I knew it right then why this smart new tiny device got so much fame.

Google Chromecast HDMI is a dongle that is connected with a TV HDMI port and it Streams online videos, music, photos, shows, websites and much more to TV. The Live Stream is controlled from Smartphones, Tablets and laptops. It supports great many apps for video streaming including Youtube,Netflix, Hulu Plus,HBO Go, ESPN, Pandora, MLB.TV, Plex, MLS, Google Play movies and music, VEVO, Crackle, RDIO. The price of chromecast is $37.49 with free shipping inside USA. It is the cheapest among its rival streaming devices. ROKU 3500R Streaming Stick (HDMI) is $46.99, Apple TV MD19911/A is $64.99, ROKU 3 Streaming Media Player (4230R) with voice search (2015 Model) is $95.40. Box contains the dongle, an HDMI extender for TVs that don’t have the HDMI port, a micro USB power cable, and a power plug in case there is no USB port on TV. It doesn’t require any remote because it can be controlled by any Smartphone, tablet, laptop within the WIFI network to which the dongle is connected. These devices can control the volume, playback and browse or send videos for it. These multi control devices works in a very amazing way, e.g. I started playing a video on TV via the dongle and after sometime I leave the house while the video is running on TV, my brother can control the device from his Smartphone or tablet or laptop and stop the playback , watch another video or whatever he likes.

These Media streaming devices actually gave users the power to stop being bothered by small screens and tiny speakers and connect your handheld anytime, quickly and effortlessly to a bigger screen and better sound system. Initially Google Chromecast was not pictured to work like Miracast device or Apple’s airplay. It was not supposed to mirror whatever is on the device, but users started taking help of other apps like plexapp to make it work like a screen cast. Because of this Google chromecast recently added a screen cast option on experimental basis. I found some minor flaws in it like I can’t see mouse pointer when I cast my laptop screen on TV. But as it is experimental so never mind Google.  People also question about the video formats it supports. The answer is Every video format including FLV, that can be watched on google chrome can be watched on chromecast except for those formats that requires third party softwares like QuickTime. Its weight is 0.2 ounces, dimensions 4.7 x 4.7 x 1.4, color available is only Black. It is powered by USB cable through TV’s USB port or the power adapter. Cory Doctorow said once “This is why I loved technology, if you use it right, it could give you power and privacy”.
